Brown Sugar Ham Steak
Fresh ham steaks are very different than your typical slab of ham from the grocery store. This steak is uncured, it is a cross section cut of the ham (back leg) of the pig. It requires a quick hot sear, or low and slow cooking, to retain its tenderness. Below is the recipe for our favorite way to cook a ham steak. If you do happen to look for a different recipe, be sure to include FRESH in your search as to not be inundated with conventional ham recipes.
Preparation:
1.Lightly salt ham steak.
2.Melt butter/oil in large, heavy bottom skillet. Add steak and cook on medium heat until brown on both sides. (Approximately 3-5 minutes)
3.Remove steak from skillet and keep warm.
4.Combine water, mustard, brown sugar and paprika. Add to skillet and cook until sugar is dissolved. (Approximately 5 minutes)
5.Put steak back into skillet and cook for another 5 minutes. Keep glaze from burning by moving steak around in pan often. Flip steak a few times to coat both sides in glaze.
6.Serve and eat hot! Enjoy!
Variation: Take recipe from Southern Comfort to Asian Inspired substituting mustard for rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and ginger.
